Cerebral Palsy Awareness

31st July – 6th August is Cerebral Palsy Awareness week. Cerebral Palsy is a permanent, non-progressive physical disability that affects movement. In Australia approx every 18 hours a child is born with CP, that’s about 1 in 500 children. CP affects movement to varying degress, and CP sufferers can also have seizures, and impairments in speech, hearing, vision or intellect. There is no known cure. CP Awareness week aims to create greater awareness, understanding and acceptance, and to work towards social inclusion.

Fragile X Awareness Day

22nd July is Fragile X Awareness Day.  Fragile X Syndrome is the the leading inherited cause of intellectual disability worldwide. It is also the most common known cause of Autism and autistic type behaviours. Fragile X is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the X chromosome. Approx  1 in every 4000 males and 1 in 6000 females are affected, however approx 1 in 250 women and 1 in 800 men are carriers. Every week in Australia one child is born who is fully affected and twelve children are born who are carriers. Sufferers may have speech and communication problems, global developmental delay, ASD, anxiety  and many other issues. There is no known cure.
