Spina Bifida Awareness Week

This week, 1st-7th September is Spina Bifida Awareness Week. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect which occurs during the first month of a baby’s development in the womb. People with Spina Bifida will have varying degrees of permanent disability, however many are able to lead fulfilling lives. Approximately 5000 people in Australia have SB. The exact cause is not known, and there is no cure, but the chances of having a baby with Spina Bifida can be greatly reduced by taking adequate folate before conception and during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
