Last blog for 2010…

It’s that time of the year again. Time when we all try to take  a break, enjoy a holiday if we can, and spend time with those we love.

It’s been another whirlwind of a year, as I’m sure most of you can relate. Apart from all the usual ‘mum’ things to do to keep a household running, there’s also been lots of work running this business, stress from ongoing house renovations and the usual runaround that is involved with special needs kids. I can tell you, I’m certainly looking forward to a little break.

The first week of school holidays has seen us housebound with sick children and very poor weather, but thankfully the sickness seems to be passing – just in time for the all important 25th of December! I can’t say the same about the weather…..hmmmm….I’m not sure how much beach time we will get these summer holidays if this weather keeps up, but I’m sure we’ll find other things to keep the kids amused, de-stressed and happy.

This time of year is always exhausting, with most families flitting from one social event to another. Those of us with special kids may not have that same luxury, or desire, to extend ourselves and our children to that busy-ness. This year we have been fortunate enough to have had an intermittently busy social schedule, but busy with smaller events that our children can handle well enough. There has certainly been anxiety, social awkwardness and meltdowns, but they have done well considering what we have asked of them.

Last weekend we were lucky enough to have received two invites for our children to attend the 4KQ Variety Special Childrens Christmas party at the Convention Centre in Brisbane. There are 3000 tickets issued to special children of various needs and abilities, so it is a busy day. It was crowded and noisy, and there were long lines for everything, but the children who attended were having a ball.   I was so impressed with the thought that had gone into the event, including everything from wheelchair friendly rides to all the free food and drink the kids could handle.  All children who attended went home with gifts from Santa – who arrived behind many fluffy, white, and very cute Samoyed dogs. The volunteers were fabulous, and even though it was a huge event for most of the children attending, there would have been 3000 very happy kids at the end of the day.

It’s this time of year when we are all reminded to feel very thankful for all the good things we have in our lives. I am thankful!

I am thankful for my wonderful family and circles of friends – who I cherish. I am thankful for the opportunity to operate this business, and hopefully in some way help other families like mine. I am thankful that I have a warm and dry place to live, with food in my belly and love in my heart, when so many others go without some or all of those things.  I am thankful for my wonderful, very supportive and loving  husband whom I adore. I am thankful for my beautiful children. Though they present me with many challenges, and plenty of stress and worry, they also provide me with so much pleasure, love and happiness. I am so proud of their achievements, and the people they are becoming as they grow. I would not want to live a day without them. For all these things I am so grateful!

I would like to wish everyone a truly wonderful Christmas with the special people in your life. Please stay safe, be happy and enjoy this time of year. Thank you to all our valued customers out there for your support this year, and we will look forward to another good year in 2011.

So, from Special Needs 4 Special Needs – Merry Christmas! Happy New Year, and we will see you again when we re-open on the 10th January!

Best wishes,

Fiona :)
